Episode #37: Roadisode 6 With Ken The Zen

Listen:
It’s roadisode time again, y’all!
This time it’s your humble host and the great Ken The Zen deep in the heart of Texas, enjoying a bottle of wine that would certainly rank among our favourites if we had rankings. As ever, our conversation went all over the place, from Pearl Jam and Love/Hate’s Blackout in the Red Room to the XFL and English soccer.
You can also find out who each of us picked to win the Super Bowl – and who was right.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what a podcast brings to its audience. Not just my podcast, but every podcast. You know, it seems kind of superficial to do a show like this merely for the entertainment value, but do we underestimate the value of entertainment?
Yes, the show launched as exclusively an interview show designed to encourage listeners to follow their dreams. It was meant to provide evidence that it’s possible to do the things you want to do. That fundamental message remains – Ken and I touring in Texas is proof that it’s possible to tour in Texas – but there have been episodes lately that are perhaps less overt in message and more geared to entertainment.
This roadisode is one of them. And you know what? That’s okay. And inspiring. One of the great gifts of any audio or video medium is that it provides a connection. I used to listen to talk radio a lot on lonely nights when I was in university. It was nice to hear other voices. Nice to feel like there were other people around me. I think a lot of the television shows we watch and podcasts we listen to are about that too.
I envision a time when this show can provide that as well. It can provide a group of friends like me and Ken and Deni Gauthier and others. It can be a source of comfort. And laughs. And wisdom. And ideas.
It’s all part of an evolution, kids. And probably we’ve gone too deep already in setting up an episode about whether the Dukes of Hazzard was set in the Carolinas or in Georgia.
Anyway, please enjoy this conversation with our old friend Ken The Zen. And, as ever, if there are topics you think we should talk about, contact me and let me know!
